Smero: shot policeman dies

A POLICE Constable Njabulo Mahlaba, who was shot and robbed on the Msunduzi River bridge in Smero last month, died in hospital on Friday.

Mahlaba (30) was a police constable at the Mountain Rise police station. He and his 23-year-old girlfriend were walking from a local tavern to his home when they were accosted by two unknown men wearing balaclava’s. One of the men fired a shot at Mahlaba, seriously wounding him. He sustained a gunshot wound to the neck. They robbed the couple of their cellphones and cash.

SA Police Force spokesperson Joey Jeevan said the two suspects have been charged with murder and armed robbery.
