Smit picks all-star cast for Barney tie

JOHN Smit has lined up a star-studded cast for the Barney’s Army rugby match agianst the Sharks at King’s Park on Friday.

Tickets are on sale at the Sharks’ ticket office at King’s Park or online via Computicket for the special rugby clash betyween Smit’s team and his former Sharks’ team-mates.

With an illustrious line-up of former Sharks, Boks and international players to play in Barney’s Army, the game is being played in celebration of the launch of the John Smit Foundation, a charitable trust set up to assist some of Smit’s chosen charities, including the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Fund, The LIV Village and the Bobbi Bear Foundation.

It is also Smit’s final farewell to the King’s Park faithful, who have supported him over the past 10 years when he was a key part of the Sharks and Springbok set up.

“I am really looking forward to what promises to be a thrilling evening of rugby with a line-up of some great friends from around the world,” said Smit who has been on tour with the Barbarian’s side in the UK.

“We’ve got a whole lot of Rugby World Cup winners, including Stephen Donald from New Zealand and my former SA teammates Butch James, Victor Matfield and Percy Montgomery.”

Other team members are Smit’s formers Sharks and Springbok team-mates, Shaun Sowerby, Brent Russell, Deon Carstens, Peter Dixon, Francois Louw and De Wet Barry, as well as former England internationals Matt Banahan and Nick Abendanon, former Argentinian prop Martin Scelzo, former Scotland captain Jason White and fellow UK club players Julian Salvi and Joe Maddock.

Former Sharks and Springbok coach Ian McIntosh is the team’s coach.

Sharks coach John Plumtree will use the outing to ease his players back into action after their three-week break from Super Rugby.

The match starts at 7.10 pm, with a curtain-raiser at 5 pm featuring College Rovers playing against the 2012 Varsity Cup winners, Tukkies.

Tickets are R50 for adults and R15 for scholars. All match-day proceeds will go towards the John Smit Foundation.

Sharks season ticket and suite holders will be able to use their tickets for the match.
