Smouldering rubbish reignites

2010-06-30 00:00

DESPITE the fire department’s best efforts to extinguish the fires at the municipal landfill, it continues to smoulder.

The smouldering rubbish that had been buried deep in the mounds of garbage reignted again yesterday.

The municipal landfill staff are in frequent touch with the fire department, letting it know when the flames start up again.

“It’s easy to extinguish the flames, but not what is smouldering underneath,” an official at the department said.

The fire department said the biggest problem is smoke, even when there are no flames.

Yesterday, the department had two fire engines and a grader at the site.

The grader was used to get under the top layer of rubbish.

Water from the fire engines was used to put out the small fires which had broken out.

According to the fire department, the situation may continue indefinitely.

The South African Weather Bureau predicts little wind for tomorrow and a 30% chance of rain, which may reduce the extent of the smoke.
