Snake attack: Injured mamba bites woman twice

2010-03-05 00:00

AN elderly woman, a foreign visitor, is fighting for her life at the Netcare Umhlanga hospital after she was bitten twice by a green mamba yesterday.

The unidentified woman is believed to be from the Siberia region of Russia.

Jeff Wicks of Netcare 911 said the woman was crossing Umdloti Link Road when the snake bit her, after a car had run over the snake in the road.

The stricken reptile bit the woman twice on her lower leg. Netcare 911 paramedics found the woman in a critical condition after the snake’s neurotoxic venom had taken effect. She was intubated, placed on a ventilator and airlifted to hospital.

Metro police killed the injured snake and identified it.

Snake handler Marc Enslin said green mambas are neurotoxic and highly venomous.

“They are less aggressive compared to the black mambas and their venom attacks the nervous system. When bitten, stay calm and don’t try to kill the snake. See a doctor immediately,” Enslin said.
