Snow on the Berg, but sun will soon be back

2013-08-10 00:00

FREEZING temperatures in KwaZulu-Natal usually mean there’s snow on the Drakensberg.

This cold weekend is no exception. Snow fell on Thursday night at Sani Pass, covering the top peaks there. Guests at the Sani Mountain Lodge woke up to find their cars covered in ice. But according to the South African Weather Service, the weather is expected to clear up for the rest of the weekend, with only light snow fall expected, if any.

The coldest areas in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday were Mooi River with a maximum temperature of seven degrees Celsius, Underberg with a maximum of six degrees Celsius and Kokstad, being the coldest, with a maximum of four degrees Celsius.

The extremely cold temperatures in Kokstad only yielded snow in certain areas. Despite it having the coldest temperatures in the province, there was no snow in Kokstad itself.

Kokstad resident Nolwazi Metandaba was hoping for snow:

“A lot of people don’t like to go out in the snow because they think it’s cold … When the snow is hard, it is not that cold. It’s only cold when the snow melts. That’s why I go out to enjoy it. I love it.”
