Soap’s film keeps rolling

LERATO Motau made a very big impression as T.J. Mokoena, the sly, calculating businesswoman in Egoli Place of Gold — and she’s set to continue that role in the new Franz Marx movie Egol i, which reveals the deep and dark secrets of Niek’s (David Rees) and Joe’s (Darren Kelkens) pasts.

Picking up several months after the TV series ended with Louwna (Brumilda van Rensburg) being left a widow and Joe making a surprise comeback, fans will discover that Niek and Joe now work for TJ and that Joe’s past is catching up with him. And it doesn’t take long for Niek’s feisty wife, Sonet (Tiffany Kelly), to realise a ghost in her husband’s past is haunting him.

Fans will also be able to catch up with Nenna (Shaleen Surtie-Richards), who still rules Windsor Manor with a firm hand; meet Joe’s new love interest, Peggy (Leandie du Randt), a sexy stripper; find out what’s going on with Bienkie (Christina Storm) and her husband Koert (Ivan Zimmermann), who return from Bela Bela with Koert’s adopted “parents” Duifie (Casper de Vries) and Faan (Andre Stolz) on their heels; and see how Louwna is coping after her husband’s tragic death.

There is also a cameo by Lolly Jackson, the murdered boss of Teazers. According to the film’s publicity officer, Martjie Roos, the number of people who watched the Egoli trailer on YouTube after Jackson’s murder increased from 160 to 1 400.

Egoli, the first Afrikaans dramatic film to hit the big screen in more than a decade, opens in cinemas on June 16.
