Soccer: Amajita meet favourites Ghana in last 16

2009-10-06 00:00

HAVING found their form late to beat Honduras 2-0 in their final Group F game of the Fifa Under-20 World Cup in Egypt, South Africa meet African rivals Ghana in the last 16 in Ismailia today.

The Ghanaians announced themselves as tournament favourites again with a 4-0 group stages thrashing of England.

But a 2-2 draw in the West Africans’ final group game against Uruguay, when Ghana, like South Africa in their opener against UAE, gave away a two-goal advantage, will give Amajita hope.

Besides, the South Africans narrowly lost 4-3 to Ghana in the African Youth Championships earlier this year, so they will feel they have a chance of an upset result to reach the quarter-finals.

“We know South Africa very well, but even so we’re going to be studying hard the way they’ve played in this tournament,” said Ghana coach Sellas Tetteh. “We’re the favourites, we know that, but we will be taking absolutely nothing for granted.”

His south African counterpart, Serame Letsoaka, said Ghana “are a quality side”.

“It will be a real African derby, and as we know in derbies, anything can happen.”

Kick-off: 4.30 pm, live on SuperSport 3.
