Soccer: Hosts Carter go down to Alex

2012-07-24 00:00

THE high school soccer season kicked off on Saturday, with Carter hosting Alex High and going down 2-0 at home. These teams are strong sides in the region and the game did not disappoint.

Visitors Alex were buoyed by their vocal travelling teams, who had stayed on to watch the main game, and their team rewarded them after just eight minutes when a mesmerising run down the left wing by Mpilonhle Mkhize, who crossed for Ntobeko Shelembe to bundle over the line.

An early goal always adds pace to a game and the Carter side looked unable to cope and were let off the hook when Alex had a second goal disallowed soon after. The home side gradually found their feet and were perhaps unlucky not be awarded a penalty when midfielder Mhlengi Sithole went down inside the penalty area. Alex’s defence held firm for the rest of the half to ensure they went into the break with their lead intact.

The second half was all Alex and only some excellent goalkeeping by Minky Mtshali kept the scoreline down.

With time running out, Carter pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but left holes at the back and this was exposed when Alex striker Qiniso Mahlobo broke away and was pulled down in the box. He picked himself up to score from the spot and double the lead.
