WITH the rest of the country in a frenzy about the 2010 Fifa World Cup, the Padsa Easter soccer tournament, will kick off today at Northdale Stadium and run until April 5.

The tournament is the biggest amateur competition in South Africa.

With prize money of R150 000, the tournament has grown over the years and has attracted teams from as far afield as Gauteng, Port Elizabeth, Kokstad and Cape Town.

Blue Bells from Cape Town are defending champions in the over-35 section.

Last year saw a thrilling final in the open section, when another team from Cape Town, Gallandale, beat local favourites Sobantu Shooting Stars in the dying minutes by one goal.

The Padsa tournament director, Ronnie “Mfethu” Naidoo, said, “We are pleased with the number of teams that will be taking part in the tournament, even though a number of teams pulled out …

“Some of their players are now playing in the Vodacom league and are now regarded as professional players.”

The tournament has 28 teams in group one, 20 in group two, nine over-35 teams and 58 junior teams.

Entry for adults is R8 and R2 for children.

In the junior section, the likes of Maritzburg United FC under 17 and Under 15 will also be taking part.

The junior teams will be playing at the Protea Grounds.

There will be a team parade at 6.30 pm and a Grand Challenge Match at 8 pm, with the participating teams yet to be confirmed.
