Sodeana: shark bites diver

2010-07-08 00:00

A TIGER shark is believed to have attacked a 21-year-old Cape Town woman while she was snorkelling over Anton’s Reef on the seaward side of the famous Two-Mile Reef at Sodwana Bay on Sunday.

The iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board named the swimmer as Sarah Haiden, who was reported to be in good spirits and expected to return home today.

The incident reportedly happened at about 1 pm on Sunday when a group of scuba divers from the boat Adventure Mania, skippered by Jacques van Jaarsveld, were exploring the reef. Two passengers, including Haiden, were snorkelling around the surface marker buoy. After about 45 minutes Haiden swam to the surface marker about 30 metres away, and as the divers were also due to surface, the skipper slowly followed her towards the buoy.

Haiden suddenly began to scream and was pulled under water. The boat was beside her within seconds and she was pulled aboard.

She had several severe lacerations to her lower left leg and foot.

Authorities said the description of the shark by Haiden and eyewitnesses who saw the shark’s fin indicated the attacker could have been a Tiger shark about three metres long. Photographs of the bite marks have been sent to the KZN Sharks Board for identification.
