Sold for a pittance

A LIGHT-fingered domestic worker who stole jewellery worth almost R150 000 from her employer in Pietermaritzburg pleaded guilty to the theft and revealed she had sold five of the rings and two gold chains for R1 600. The case against Nomfundo Ngidi (21) was postponed until June 20 pending reports from a social worker and correctional supervision official.

In a statement before the regional court, Ngidi admitted last week she stole the jewellery from the home of her employer, Manormoney Govender, in the Hayfields area earlier this month.

Ngidi said her employer left her alone in the house while she went to fetch her daughter at school. “I was cleaning the bedroom. I opened a cupboard and saw the jewellery inside … it was in a drawer. I took the jewellery and when it was time to leave work and go home I took the jewellery with me.”

Ngidi said the next day she took the jewellery to a place called “Just In Gold Exchange” in Church Street, Pietermaritzburg and exchanged five rings and two gold chains for R1 600.

“I do not know the person to whom I sold the items,” she said.

Ngidi said she’d known that what she did was wrong. “I place myself at the mercy of the court,” she added.
