Soldier investigated for shooting two people

2014-03-05 00:00

THE South African National Defence Force is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting of two people by a soldier in Durban.

One man was killed and another was admitted to Addington Hospital with a gunshot wound to the knee on Sunday.

The 29-year-old soldier is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today on charges of murder and attempted murder.

Police spokesperson Captain Khephu Ndlovu said the soldier alleged that he had shot the men when they had attempted to hijack him.

SANDF spokesperson General Xolani Mabanga said he had no information about the matter at this stage.

He said the matter would be looked at in two perspectives.

“The man is alleged to have been carrying a service firearm, so was he on duty or was he returning home from duty when he found himself in a dangerous situation? Is the area of the incident near his residence? Once we get this, then we can draw a conclusion and then the technicalities of the matter can be dealt with by the legal experts,” said Mabanga.

He said the other perspective would be to get reasons for their member’s presence in the area of the incident.

“Without the detailed information on the incident we cannot comment,” he said

A group of students who live near the scene of the shooting in Manhatten Flats, Mahatma Gandhi Road, said they heard a commotion in the street and watched the incident from their windows.
