ATHLONE Park’s Sarah Baum enjoyed a solid day in the waves at Durban’s Dairy Beach on Sunday, winning two divisions in the Women’s Surf Challenge.
In small surf under cloudy conditions, Baum dominated in an event exclusively for women surfers, presented by Surfing South Africa and supported by Sport and Recreation SA.
Baum won the open division and U20 title, pocketing R3 100 for her work.
In the open division, she fought off some top competition, beating Heather Clarke (Port Shepstone), Kat Steffen (Westville) and Heidi Palmboom (Bluff).
In the U20 contest, Baum finished ahead of Umhlanga’s Teal Hogg with Palmboom third and Chanelle Botha (Warner Beach) fourth.
Botha went one better in the U16 final, claiming the honours ahead of Hogg, the current SA U17 champion. Olivia Brand Umdloti) was third and Jade Mets (Umhlanga) fourth.
Down in Cape Town, in three to four foot waves at Kommetjie, Hout Bay’s Tanika Hoffman won the open title, underlining why she is a member of the SA team, looking stylish and setting Long Beach alight. SA junior team member Anoush Zakarian won the U20 and U16 divisions.
