Solid rock at the Red Door

2011-03-04 00:00

Famed for rock covers of the 70s, the Splayed Ferrets have become one of Maritzburg’s stellar rock acts. Consisting of Barry Meintjies, Chris Palframan, Luke Wyngaard, Martin Godfrey and Paul de Fleuriot, their collective musical experience on paper is note-worthy, but this not a group that takes itself too seriously.

At a band practice last week, the band’s five members were in typically jovial mood. “We don’t do midi tracks,” says Godfrey. “No,” agrees Meintjies. “We’re completely off the track!” We all laugh. “We’re a bit too working class for that,” he adds.

The band then recites Deep Purple’s Black Night. As Godfrey, the vocalist, begins - it’s clear his microphone needs to be turned up above the driving electric guitars. Most of the band call it to a halt with shouts of “Whoa!”, “Hold up!” and “Ay yay yay!”

De Fleuriot (on electric guitar) looks up and candidly reflects, “I thought it sounded nice.” More laughter.

It's a refreshing thing to find a band like this. As Godfrey tweets later: "Fun "interview" with @rcalder earlier, old rockers are never serious!"

Having performed together extensively in KwaZulu-Natal as well as further afield, the Ferrets have garnered a reputation of performing solid rock ‘n roll and maintained an attitude of fun, all of which gives their performances an overall tone of nostalgic enjoyment.

The band will be performing at the Red Door on March 5 at 8.15pm. Entrance is R35.
