Some of the top-20 hopefuls to watch at this year’s Comrades

2010-05-29 00:00

IF you’re out on the Comrades route this year showing your support for the field of runners, look out for some of Pietermaritzburg’s top-20 hopefuls for 2010.

Kerry Koen: I finished in 11th place last year and ninth in the Two Oceans this year. Training has gone well. The most important thing for me is to enjoy my run, and I am quietly confident that I will better my 2009 result.

Bongomusa Mthembu: I managed to finish in seventh place last year. Since then I am now a full-time professional athlete with Mr Price. Comrades 2010 is a special year, and will be very competitive, as everyone wants to do well. Anyone finishing in the top 20 this year can say they are of the best in the world in ultra running.

Sandile Makhaye: I managed an 18th position last year, and have been training really hard for the 2010 race. I am optimistic, and confident of improving my result. A top 10 finish would be marvellous for me and my family.

Petros Sosibo: I finished in 13th place last year. Preparations have gone well, and while I work full time, I have to juggle my training and work life. 2010 is special as it is the 85th Anniversary of the Comrades Marathon, and I think the race this year will be very exciting.
