Something ‘fishy’ in Allandale’s water

2009-04-02 00:00

Residents of Allandale say they have been experiencing problems with their tap water in recent weeks. They say it has a bad, fishy smell and has been causing children and some adults to fall sick.

A resident, who asked not to be named, complained about the water. “We had a fishy smell in the water. Last week we changed the filter, but the smell returned this week,” he said, adding that his wife and two of his children have been experiencing stomach cramps and diarrhoea. One of them has been absent from school since Monday.

He said they have tried to communicate with the municipality, but have not had any success. “We tried to get hold of them, but we keep getting a busy tone,” he said.

Another resident, Anita Govender, said: “The water … has a chlorine taste to it. My daughter, my husband and my little boy have also been sick.” She said she has also been trying to get hold of the municipality, but to no avail.

Vinesh Naidoo, the pharmacist at Allandale Pharmacy, said that although there are always complaints about diarrhoea and cramps, “there was a higher incidence of people coming in over the month of March”.

The municipality said they placed a public notice in The Witness on March 13 warning residents of plans to chlorine flush the system after monitoring found there was inadequate chlorine. The notice said this would pose no health risks to the public.
