Source of rubbish flood found

2008-01-10 00:00

THE unsightly scene of rubbish floating down the Duzi river is the result of an illegal dumpsite along the Slangspruit that washed into the river after heavy rain.

This was confirmed by city manager Rob Haswell, who said the municipality will work around the clock to ensure the cleanliness of the river.

“Waste management will work jointly with water management to identify any other incidents of illegal dumping in the kwaPata and Ashdown areas,” said Haswell.

He said the river cannot be cleaned up overnight, but unified efforts from all departments and the tightening of illegal dumping by-laws will ensure that waste management throughout the whole Edendale area is given due attention.

Mark Steele of the Democratic Alliance said that the problem is bound to persist unless council establishes an efficient and cost-effective waste management system. “The filth of the Duzi is more about waste management than water management.”
