South Africa cricket stars honour Tendulkar

2013-11-14 00:00

SACHIN Tendulkar is regarded by many experts as the best batsman of all time to grace the cricket pitch.

JP Duminy:

To have played in 200 Tests is a wonderful performance. I remember how I — as a youngster — looked up to him, dazzled by his talent. To have played so well for such a long time is an indication of his character and expertise.

He is a true professional on and off the field.

I hope he enjoys his well-deserved rest.

Dale Steyn:

I have been involved over the years in a number of duels with Sachin and came second from time to time. I remember the 200 he hit at Gwalior. It was one of the best innings that I have ever seen.

He is without doubt a legend and hopefully he will play a wonderful last match.

It has always been a challenge for me to bowl at him; he could hit the ball to any corner of the field.

One of my most precious moments is the over I bowled against him at Newlands in 2011. I always enjoyed our duels on the field but he was also a gentleman off the field.

AB de Villiers:

Congratulations to Sachin on his 200th Test. It is a remarkable performance.

Even more so when one takes into consideration that his fantastic standard of play spans over 25 years.

He has been a role model for many and hopefully his legacy will in future inspire younger players.

We have been on the receiving end of a number of Tendulkar centuries. He has been an amazing talented batsman.

I hope he enjoys his retirement, but he will surely be missed.

Morné Morkel:

For a bowler, Sachin’s wicket has always been the big prize.

He’s the holder of just about all the batting records, so we always knew we had to get him out early.

I want to congratulate him with this fantastic milestone and for providing so much pleasure over the years to the cricketing world.

Graeme Smith:

When I one day look back, the highlights of my career would have been the opportunities I had to have played against players such as [Ricky] Ponting, [Brian] Lara and Tendulkar.

Shaun Pollock:

I think to have played 200 Tests is an unbelievable performance. Sachin was a wonderful cricketer to have watched playing and to have played against.

He deserves all the credit for the manner in which he handled the almost unbearable pressure and expectations that faced him.

I wish him all the success for his last Test and as a cricketing romantic — that I am — I hope he delivers a performance that matches his career.

Paul Adams:

It has been an honour to have played against him. I still remember the amazing century he hit against us in the New Year’s Test at Newlands in 1997.

I will always remember him for his good use of his feet and his reliable hands whenever he batted against me.

At times I felt that his bat was much broader than those of other players.
