South Coast: 12 killed in accidents

2013-06-17 00:00

IT was a weekend of death on KwaZulu-Natal roads, with 12 people killed in three accidents.

On Friday night, six people died when four cars caught fire after a pile-up, apparently caused by a car doing a U-turn on the freeway near Park Rynie. Four others were injured in the gruesome accident.

Yesterday, five people were killed and four hurt, one critically, in a head-on collision on the R102 in Mnini near Umkomaas.

Netcare 911 paramedics said they found the people still trapped in the wreckage of their vehicles. Firemen used the Jaws of Life to free the injured.

On the N2 near Marburg yesterday morning, a man was killed and two were injured when a truck overturned.

Elsewhere in the province, in MidIllovo on Saturday, three people were killed when a tractor overturned.

On the N3 near Camperdown, a pedestrian was killed on Saturday.

The Witness also received unconfirmed reports that a 10-year-old boy was knocked down and killed by a taxi on the R33 near New Hanover yesterday.

Kwanele Ncalane, the spokesperson for Transport MEC Willies Mchunu, said the MEC was concerned about the carnage. “All these accide-nts are the result of silly mistakes and it confirms our view that they can be avoided if people would follow the rules of the road.”
