South Coast Tourism lays on a barrel of fun for December

2011-11-30 00:00

SOUTH Coast Tourism chief executive officer Michael Bertram says the South Coast will be a hub of activity this December.

The entertainment programme on Margate’s main beach has been finalised and will include the South Coast Summer Tour, which has attracted events such as the Vodacom Beach Festival and the MTN Beach Festival.

“All of these events are driven by massive media campaigns and although it was difficult to secure these events because of the negative press Margate has received, we still managed to pull through,” said Bertram.

Bookings for holiday accommodation from Port Edward to Scottburgh have reportedly led to an occupancy rate of nearly 70%.

“We expect this percentage to rise closer to December as many people aren’t aware of what sort of bonuses they will be receiving,” Bertram said.

Holidaymakers usually book holidays in either mid-December or at the end of December, he said.

“Everyone wants to be on holiday at about the same time and if you don’t book in advance it could be a problem.”

However, holidaymakers are booking shorter stays because of tighter budgets.

“Although the high petrol price is a concern, I don’t think that deters holidaymakers from coming to the South Coast.”

The South Coast Summer Tour runs until January 7.

Vicky Wentzel of Wozani Africa said the programme, which took her a year to compile, is the biggest beach programme the South Coast will ever see.
