South Coast enoys unusually peaceful Easter

2011-04-26 00:00

POLICE along the South Coast have reported one of the most peaceful Easter periods in years, with minimal crime and no serious collisions on the roads, apart from one major bus accident.

“It’s a pleasant surprise and I really do hope it lasts,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid of the SA Police Force Port Shepstone.

She said the Road Traffic Inspectorate and its partner law enforcement agencies have made their presence felt, with roadblocks and speed cameras featuring prominently throughout the festive weekend.

The route to and from Durban has speed cameras only two kilometres apart in some instances, which Wiid said has made a significant impact in reducing accidents.

Traffic volumes are expected to rise in the run-up to the local government elections on May 18.

Wiid said the police and the Independent Electoral Commission have co-ordinating structures to ensure that voters reach their polling destinations safely.
