South Coast: sardine fever set to hit Durban

2010-07-16 00:00

SARDINE shoals, which came ashore in Margate on Wednesday morning, have started to move north, and Durban is standing by for the run.

KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board’s head of operations, Mike Anderson-Reade, said that since yesterday morning. the sardines have been beaching in large numbers in the Amanzimtoti, uMtwalume, Scottburgh, Park Rynie and Ifafa areas.

“One good-size netting took place at Bazley Beach and Ifafa during mid-morning and a second netting at Scottburgh towards lunchtime.

“It appears as if these shoals are moving very quickly northwards and the KZN Sharks Board will be removing the shark safety gear off Anstey’s and Brighton beaches and reducing the gear off Durban in anticipation of the arrival of these small shoals,” said Anderson-Reade.

However, he warned that as the weather is expected to deteriorate over the next 24 hours due to the arrival of a cold front, the sardines will likely disappear.
