South Coast takes stock of storms damage

MUNICIPALITIES within the Ugu District on the South Coast were still mopping up the mess after the violent storm of the past two days.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said police were still looking for more bodies.

“We are also still searching for a woman who was swept away in the Bhobhoyi River on Monday,” said Wiid.

Ugu District Municipality spokesperson Sipho Khuzwayo said 35 houses as well as roads in Umzumbe Municipality were destroyed, including the Morrison Bridge.

Khuzwayo said Umuziwabantu and Ezinqoleni Municipalities each reported 10 cases of collapsed houses and that rural roads were not accessible.

He said Vulamehlo Municipality suffered major road damage and 50 houses were damaged.

Khuzwayo said a preliminary disaster report would be presented to Ugu Mayor Ntombifikile Gumede by tomorrow.

“ We would like to assure the affected families that Ugu, with the help of various sectors of the community, will assist the affected rebuild their lives,” said Gumede.
