Space, not as you know it

WITH all the hype surrounding Gravity, I was very interested to see how exciting watching two people floating around in space would be. Not only is it interesting, it is tense, emotional and incredible.

Director Alfonso Cuarón brilliantly uses the true nature of outer space as a terrifying yet beautiful backdrop. Imagine being trapped above the Earth where no one can hear you scream. For those who dare to venture beyond the Earth’s atmosphere, that is a very real possibility.

Sandra Bullock once again proves that she is so much more than the geeky girl who was beautiful all along. George Clooney is as charming as ever. But the real star of the film is the cinematography. The shots vary between sweeping long shots to close-up point-of-view shots. You are drawn into the spacesuits then pulled out into the depths of space. This helps the audience get a feel of the situation with the characters. You feel as if you are with them, lost in space and terrified.

The visual splendour of this film is indescribable. We have all seen space, be it through films, books or visits to the planetarium, but we have never seen it like this.

I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat, holding my breath to see what happens next. The silence of the audience in the cinema echoed my feelings. This is a different take on the regular space-genre films. It has a similar feel to the film 127 Hours, but with a much grander scope. This film is a rare gem. You don’t just watch it, you experience it — and everyone should.
