Spar Ladies event: log may undergo revamp in Durban

Grace de Oliveira will be hoping that home ground advantage will give her an edge in her bid to move up the Spar Ladies Grand Prix log table when the series comes to Kingsmead on June 22.

De Oliveira, who finished third behind Rene Kalmer and Annerien van Schalkwyk in last year’s league, is one of 18 athletes who have competed in both the Cape town and P.E. races. The Durban event is next on the schedule.

Kalmer, who yesterday arrived back from national duty at the African Championships in Ethiopia, won the Cape event earning a maximum 33 points, which currently is only good enough for seventh position on the log. Impressive running by Cape Technikon’s Michelle Bartman has put her in pole position on 44 points.

Kalmer, Irvette van Blerk, Zintle Xiniwe, and Gloria Babeba can all be expected to line up for the Durban event and this could see the log table undergo a considerable re-vamp.

However, the new strength in depth of the local ladies, spearheaded by South Africa’s leading women marathoner, Tanith Maxwell can cause an upset for the visitors.

But there is much more to this race than the elite level. The event, which offers both five kilometres and 10 km distances, attracts women of all abilities, sizes and backgrounds, and R2 of every entry is used for charitable causes.

Entries for the flat fast 10 km beachfront race open online tomorrow
