‘Spear’: Le grange pays fine

2012-11-10 00:00

ALTHOUGH one of the men who defaced The Spear paid a R1 000 admission of guilt fine yesterday, he still feels it was the right thing to do.

Barend le Grange (59) paid the fine at the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court. He was facing a charge of malicious damage to property, after he and Louis Mabokela (25) painted over Brett Murray’s picture, which depicted President Jacob Zuma with exposed genitals, in May. “The heart of the issue was the defusing of potential racial tension,” he told sister paper Beeld.

The state gave both men the chance to pay the admission of guilt fine, which Mabokela declined. He will be tried in February.

Le Grange said that if the case had gone ahead, he would have pleaded guilty.
