Special votes: how to apply

2011-04-19 00:00

THE Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced the application procedure for special votes and invited applications. Special votes are for voters who will not be able to vote at their polling station on election day, May 18.

Special votes are available to voters who cannot travel to their voting station because they are ill or disabled, or will be away. Voters must apply in advance for a special vote, and must already be registered to vote. People who have not already registered to vote will not be eligible for a special vote.

The IEC will send representatives to the homes of disabled or sick voters on May 16 or 17.

Voters who will not be able to vote at their voting station on election day because they will be away will vote at their station on May 16.

However, voters must register for special votes to be able to vote during these special slots.

To apply for a special vote, fill in a request form on the IEC website or at the nearest municipal election office. Forms completed in person must be submittted before May 3 and a receipt given.

If a special vote is granted, voters will vote in the same way as on May 18. The same ballot papers will be used, their thumbs will be marked, and their ID books stamped.

After voting the ballot papers will be sealed in an unmarked envelope, and then in an envelope with the voter’s name, ID number and voting district number. This is to keep track of who has voted while still ensuring secrecy as the outer envelope is discarded before counting. Voters will be removed from the voter’s roll after casting a special vote.
