Speech Day draws entries from coast

2011-08-02 00:00

THE Mandela Speech Contest is a joint project of The Witness and the Msunduzi Municipality.

The competition — in its fourth year — offers prize money of R10 000 to the winners of both the English and Zulu sections R5 000 each for second places and R2 500 for third.

Participating schools can win the Mandela floating trophy — designed by local sculptor Gert Swart — in each category.

The Rotary Club of Pietermaritzburg will award a bursary of R5 000 available to the entrant the adjudicators consider to be the most deserving.

The contest this year takes place on September 28 and 29 at Maritzburg College and the prize giving at the Tatham Art Gallery on October 14.

The contest has not only attracted interest from many local high schools, but also from a number of Durban schools, which will be competing for the first time.

A workshop was held for participants at the Winston Churchill Theatre on Friday, to improve their presentation and public speaking skills and show them how to prepare for the contest, especially as far as impromptu speaking is concerned.

Many of those attending presented speeches, which were evaluated by the workshop presenters and others at the event.

The workshop, attended by 38 pupils and teachers, was jointly sponsored by The Witness and Somta Tools. They said they found it useful and asked that it be presented again next year.
