2011-09-12 00:00

THE fourth Witness Nelson Mandela Speech Contest will take place on September 28 and 29 in the Victoria Hall at Maritzburg College.

This year it has attracted entrants from 25 schools in the English section of the contest and 17 schools in the isiZulu section. Each of the section winners will receive R10 000, with R2 000 each to two runners up in each section.

Once again the Rotary Club of

Pietermaritzburg will be providing a bursary of R5 000 to the most deserving contestant, to be used either to cover school fees for next year or to assist with university fees.

Total prize money for the contest is therefore R33 000.

Each of the winners and runners-up will receive a medallion and the winning schools will receive a floating trophy designed for the contest by Maritzburg sculptor Gert Swart.

The prizegiving will take place on October 14 at the Tatham Art Gallery at 5.30 pm.

The Mayor of Msunduzi, Chris Ndlela, will present the prizes, and the Rotary bursary will be presented by the president of the Rotary Club of Pietermaritzburg, Sabitha Maharaj.

The overall winners in both the isiZulu and English sections of the contest will deliver their winning speeches at the prizegiving.

Registration for the contest will start at 7.30 am at the Victoria Hall instead of 8 am as in the past. The contest will start at 8 am with prepared speeches, with the impromptu section after lunch.
