THE man who was caught doing 252 km/h on the N2 southbound near Sezela on Wednesday morning was fined R70 000 for speeding and drunk driving.

Amith Sookraj (30) of Phoenix was charged for speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to stop when ordered to do so.

He pleaded guilty yesterday to all charges and was fined R35 000 for speeding and failing to stop, and R35 000 for drunk driving. His licence was suspended for six months.

Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele welcomed the sentence, saying it will send a clear message to other motorists that inconsiderate driving will not be tolerated.

“The motorist has abused his privilege [to] a driving licence and he will be inconvenienced and his movements curtailed as he will have to arrange a lift, use a driver or make use of public transport,” said Ndebele in a statement.

He said the combined sentence will serve as a benchmark for similar offences, especially ahead of the Easter holiday.
