POLICE have arrested a 25-year-old suspect in connection with the rape and robbery of a 54-year-old woman in Scottsville on Tuesday

The successful arrest was carried out by members of the Mountain Rise SA Police Service family violence child protection and sexual offences unit on Thursday after they had followed up on a tip-off.

Police confirmed that the suspect was arrested at a shopping centre in the Bisley area.

Police spokesperson Joey Jeevan said of the victim: “She was allegedly tied up, raped and robbed of her belongings at her home in Ernest Tooth Road in the Scottsville area.”

She said it is alleged that the victim was asleep in the outbuilding of the premises when she was awoken by noises.

“She was confronted inside her house by an unknown man armed with a hammer. The suspect threatened her with death if she screamed and she was raped …” said Jeevan.

The victim was tied up, her house ransacked and a laptop, two cellphones, banking cards and R50 in cash were taken.

“The suspect gained entry by forcing open the back door and has been charged with house robbery and rape,” she said.

He will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court today .

Jeevan commended the speedy arrest and effective investigation conducted by the unit.
