Speedy gunmen hold up city shop

2008-11-17 00:00

THE owners of Midtown Hyper supermarket in Pietermaritzburg have offered a reward of R60 000 for information leading to the capture of six armed robbers who made off with a large amount of money and airtime vouchers on November 8.

Speaking on behalf of the owners, Indren Pillay said the reward is R10 000 per robber. The robbers were captured on the supermarket’s CCTV camera.

The gun-wielding gang entered the supermarket just after 5 pm. On the video, they are seen pretending to shop.

After casing the shop they produced firearms and told everyone to lie on the floor.

The robbers terrorised the customers, kicking them, pushing them around and pointing firearms at them, forcing them to lie down or move according to their orders.

At one point in the footage, a robber forces an old woman to the floor and makes her crawl, while pointing a gun at her.

The robbers, who carried 9 mm firearms and an AK47, robbed customers of money and cellphones.

Pillay said the robbers forced the manager to open the safe after hitting him on the head with the butt of a 9 mm pistol.

“They took all the cash that was in the safe. They took the airtime vouchers and after that, they demanded customers’ cellphones and wallets.”

The robbery took less than five minutes, which indicates that the robbers had been watching the supermarket for a while and had properly planned what they would do, said Pillay.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said a case of armed robbery is being investigated, but no arrests have been made. Anyone with information that leads to the arrest of the robbers can contact Pillay at 033 342 1100.
