Speedy response to substation fire

2011-01-31 00:00

CLAIRE Lipsett writes about the exceptional service she recently received from the municipality:

On Sunday, January 16 at 4.30 pm the electricity substation located on the Flemmer-Hesketh walkway in Hayfields exploded and was rapidly engulfed in flames. Residents throughout Hayfields lost power and quickly converged on the burning substation. We called the municipality and requested the electricity and fire departments to be dispatched immediately as the substation borders residential properties. Within 15 minutes, Netcare, firefighters and municipal engineers were on site and the fire was extinguished. We were pleased to see such a quick response with so many personnel on hand to assist.

The response crews speedily regrouped and left the area, allowing the electricity department to begin the task of rebuilding the substation. Within the hour, four teams arrived to assist, and power was restored to Adams and Kay roads by 8.30 pm. A crane was deployed to switch out the gutted unit with a brand new substation, which arrived shortly after 9.30 pm. Despite the difficult location, the new unit was successfully installed. A small team of electricians remained on site throughout the night, and power was restored to all residents in the early hours of the morning. Electricians have returned to site each night to continue commissioning the unit, causing minimal disruption to residential power supply.

We believe the response to this incident was exceptional and could only be achieved with the co-ordination of different resources, personnel and equipment. It is reassuring to know that the municipality was able to pull out all the stops and deliver a remarkable service, for which we are most thankful. And to the team that works the twilight shift, your tidiness and quiet work ethic is wonderful and highly appreciated. Keep up the good work.
