Spelling BEE: Pmb’s Afraa in finals

2013-05-14 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG will be rooting for a local Grade 6 pupil in the finals of the national Pick n Pay Spell Check spelling bee in Johannesburg on May 28.

Afraa Sheik Hoosen, of Deccan Road Primary, placed third against Hridhay Somera of Umkomaas Primary (first) and Keagan Fassom of Ferndale Primary (second) against 73 pupils in last week’s provincial spelling bee finals.

Afraa said she was excited, but rather nervous for the national final, in which 1 350 children will compete. She said “bourgeois” was a difficult word that she got right in the Durban round.

To prepare, Afraa learnt hundreds of words a day and read lots. Her favourite subject is English and she wants to become paediatrician.

School principal Siva Gounden credited teacher Nishani Harridass for preparing her pupils.
