Spilling sewage causes a stink

2013-11-06 00:00

BEING stuck in the Madala section of Mpophomeni township in Howick feels like a prison term for community members, who have lived with a terrible stench for almost six months. The stink emanates from a manhole that is spilling sewage into their gardens.

But uMgungundlovu District Municipality (UMDM) puts the blame squarely on the residents for dumping foreign objects down the drains, causing blockages.

Resident Mlondi Cele (61) said: “We are losing hope of whether the problem will ever be solved.”

Liz Taylor of the Duzi-uMngeni Conservation Trust, Howick, said it has been working tirelessly over the past three years to address sewage spills in Mpophomeni.

Taylor said one woman complained that she keeps her windows closed at all times because of the stench.

“Another says she has to keep the gate to her small property locked, as the children go and play in the mess,” said Taylor.

UMDM spokesperson Mbali Mwandla said the matter was receiving urgent attention.

Mwandla said the manhole has been high-pressure cleaned on various occasions, but a few days later the drain clogged up again. She said the technical team decided to expose the sewerage pipeline, and found various items blocking it like animal carcasses and rocks.

Residents should report water and sewer pipe bursts to either their local councillor, the customer care centre or the toll-free hotline at 080 086 4911.

“Our municipality apologises for the disruption and inconvenience caused,” said Mwandla.
