Spiritual lift for Zondo

2014-11-01 00:00

DOLPHINS batsman Khaya Zondo believes his decent start to the current season is due to a spiritual impact that has changed things around for him.

Coming off the Champions League in India and the One-Day Cup 50 over competition, Zondo finds himself “in a good space” as he contributes vital middle order runs, bowls occasionally and is a lightning bolt in the field.

“It’s going well for me,” he said. “Batting is still my focus, but to be involved in all disciplines and contribute to the team that way is important.”

Zondo scored an unbeaten 63 against the Perth Scorchers in India and has looked busy at the crease in the One-Day Cup.

Batting in the middle-order, he has made some handy contributions, upping the run rate and hitting the ball cleanly.

His latest effort was 70* in last Friday’s three-wicket win against the Lions in Potchefstroom, a contribution that sees the Dolphins second in the standings before the competition resumes in January.

“I have become a regular in the side now, thereby getting more opportunities,” said Zondo.

“I have been around for a few seasons, contributing here and there, but many people were not convinced, wondering if I was good enough to play at this level. Now I can settle down and get noticed for what I do.”

It’s a timely opportunity for Zondo who has a T20 century to his name when he scored 100* for the Impi team in 2012, against the Cobras in Paarl.

“That was a massive breakthrough for me and something I needed to build on. It’s thanks to my coaches, the people around me and God that I have made up some ground and become a recognised player in the team,” he said.

It’s all about grabbing that opportunity for Zondo and delivering when that moment presents itself.

“It makes it easier when we are winning and there is a great atmosphere in the Dolphins camp,” he said.

“We have that now and as players, we all know what we have to do, when to perform and how to win. If I can give something to the team in batting, bowling and fielding, then I can feel satisfied.”

Zondo is in the zone ahead of the Ram Slam T20, which kicks off tomorrow at the Wanderers in a triple header that sees all the franchises in action. The Dolphins are in the final match at 6 pm, against the Lions.

“It’s a format I enjoy as it ties in with my playing style of wanting to score runs and keeping the scoreboard going,” he said. “Obviously I want to keep my momentum going and win matches for the team. It’s a new season and nothing comes easy.”

All of tomorrow’s Ram Slam matches are telecast on SS2 from 9.45 am.
