Splashing out for sharks

2011-10-21 00:00

THE Addison family of Widenham in Umkomaas were rewarded for their dedication to ocean conservation when they were invited to appear on the Today Show in New York recently.

Parents Mark and Gail and their nine-year-old daughter Ella are part of the Shark Angels, an international movement aimed at saving sharks by creating awareness about their importance to the health of the oceans.

Gail said the producers asked them to appear on the show.

“They have noticed the work we were doing and wanted us on the show. It was an amazing opportunity to get our message of sharks out there.”

The family appeared on the show on October 3 and enjoyed a fully-paid week-long trip to New York.

“It was just so exciting to be a part of this. We do a lot of filming of these wonderful animals that we work with, but we are always behind the camera.

“This was a different platform for us to create awareness and better understanding of sharks.”

The Addisions run the Blue Wilderness Dive Expedition Company out of Rocky Bay. A shark expert and marine conservationist, Mark Addison has spent 30 years diving with sharks around the world.

The family interacts with sharks without the use of a cage.

“Cages promote fear, not understanding, and I have spent a considerable amount of time in the water with sharks to better understand their behaviour,” said Mark.
