Splashy Fen: fan’s body found in river

2011-04-30 00:00

THE body of a missing Splashy Fen festival-goer was found in a river yesterday morning after a four-day search.

The body of Craig Steynberg (23) was found by a farm worker in Underberg in a river about two kilometres away from the Splashy Fen venue at around 11.30 am.

Steynburg, who was from Johannesburg, was last seen at the festival on Saturday.

His father, Andre Steynberg, travelled from Johannesburg to take part in the search.

He was walking on the main road when he got information that a body had been found and identified his son’s body at the police station.

“Now I will have to inform him mother. They were very close to each other,” he said.

Styenberg jnr arrived in Underberg on April 21 with a friend, Dieter Volker, to join about 12 000 other festival-goers.

At midday on Saturday the two separated, and on Monday Volker assumed Steynberg had found a lift back home.

It was only realised later on Monday that Steynberg was missing.

He was last seen wearing only boxer shorts. He had left his T-shirt and cellphone at the venue.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said Steynberg is thought to have drowned.
