SpongeBob turning 10 in Durban

SPONGEBOB Squarepants, the loveable cartoon character who lives in a pineapple under the sea and has a starfish as a best friend, will be in Durban to celebrate his 10th birthday.

SpongeBob will be making a huge splash at uShaka Marine World from September 30 to October 4 as part of the Year of the Sponge celebrations.

The highest-rated cartoon character on Nickelodeon, SpongeBob is loved in more than 170 countries by both adults and children. His optimism and assortment of wacky friends in Bikini Bottom have kept audiences entertained for the past decade with their antics.

U.S. President Barack Obama called SpongeBob his favourite TV character, telling TV Guide magazine in 2007 it is “the show I watch with my daughters”.

Kyron Pillay (12) of Seaview said he loves SpongeBob because he is always happy and never lets his boss Mr Krabs spoil his mood.

“He is very funny, but also has a good heart. He always forgives his friends. Even though the cartoon is for children, I think that adults can learn a lot from him,” he said.

Samantha Inderjeeth (26), an accountant, loves the fact that SpongeBob takes everything at face value. “In a way, SpongeBob is an escape from the scepticism that everyone has. The other characters use him in their devious ploys and he is so innocent and forgiving,” she said.
