Sponsors, Nike and Oakley cut Oscar loose

2014-09-15 00:00

NIKE and Oakley are not going to renew their sponsorships of Oscar Pistorius.

Pistorius’s bullet-themed international Nike advertisement backfired last year after he killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day.

Nike withdrew their endorsement of Pistorius the same month. Now that he’s been convicted, Nike told the ESPN sports channel’s website that they are not going to renew his contract. “Nike has no plans for him in upcoming campaigns,” said Nike international spokesperson KeJuan Wilkins.

Last year’s Nike billboards displayed Pistorius at the start of a race with the words: “I am the bullet in the chamber.”

Sunglasses company Oakley also withdrew from its Pistorius endorsement last year after he was charged with murder, and have, like Nike, subsequently confirmed that they will not be renewing it.

Meanwhile, Pistorius’s manager Peet van Zyl has denied that the athlete is planning a book about his version of Steenkamp’s death. — Beeld.
