2008-06-02 00:00

Spoornet is hopeful that the derailment in upper Boughton will be cleared up in less than a week.

Transnet spokesman Sandile Simelane said they are working around the clock to clear the area, repair the line and reopen the route. All trains travelling between Durban and Johannesburg have been re-routed via Empangeni.

“Yesterday [Sunday] we did almost 50% of the work. We are in business with serious customers, therefore the route needs to be re-opened as fast as possible,” said Simelane.

He said the company are waiting to hear from the customer to whom the manganese was being transported to give directions as to whether they should dispose of the manganese ore or continue with transportation.

The Department of Water and Forestry Affairs allayed fears of water contamination .

Spokeswoman Lin Gravelet-Blondin said that in the form it wa being transported in, the spilled manganese would not affect water.
