Sports facility donated to local school

A MULTI-PURPOSE sports court was handed over to Sinamuva Primary School in Pietermaritzburg last week.

The facility will benefit more than 10 schools around Pietermaritzburg.

The donation brings to a close the successful 2013 Goals4Goals campaign, which raised R1 million through goals scored during the 2013 Nedbank Cup.

The bank donated R8  000 for every goal scored during the tournament — 97 goals in 31 games. An impressive R776 000 was raised and Nedbank added R224 000 to make up the R1 million needed to construct the sports facility.

Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlela welcomed the donation and urged the public to protect the property against criminals. “We must make sure that we protect this facility so that our youth can utilise it for a long time,” said Ndlela.

Sports and Recreation Deputy Minister Gert Oosthuizen said: “There are no short cuts to success in sport. You need to learn and perfect the basic skills and techniques, and then work hard at practice. Experts say that success comes only to those who put in at least 10 000 hours of hard work.” He also warned young people against using drugs and alcohol.

“Every one of you should show your gratitude to the Sports Trust and Nedbank by using every opportunity available to use this multi-purpose sports court to its fullest.”

Sinamuva school principal Gabriel Mseleku was elated to receive the sports court at his school. “This is a significant boost for us because it speaks to our philosophy of promoting excellence among children. This facility will serve as a great source of encouragement in our efforts to develop pupils through academic support, life skills and active involvement in various sporting codes.”

In less than three years since the initiative was introduced, approximately 240 schools have benefited across the country.
