Spraying on some fun

• Adam Shankman directs Hairspray, starring John Travolta (in fat-suit drag), Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, Zak Efron, Christopher Walken and Nikki Blonsky. This big-budget musical is based on the Broadway show, which in turn was based on a low-budget film. Set in the sixties it concerns Tracy Turnblad (Blonsky), an overweight teenager with all the right moves, who is obsessed with the Corny Collins Show. After one of the stars of the show leaves, Collins holds auditions to see who will be the next person on the show. Tracy makes it on the show, but makes enemies. It should all be a bit of fun.

• Outsourced is directed by John Jeffcoat and is an independent comedy that was very well received at the Toronto film festival. After his entire department is outsourced, an American novelty products salesman heads to India to train his replacement. The cast includes Asif Basra, Ayesha Dharker and Josh Hamilton.

• Cash is directed by Anubhav Sinha and stars Ajay Devgan, Ritesh Deshmukh, Zayed Khan and Esha Deol. Set in South Africa, this is a complicated story about a diamond heist with two teams of thieves battling it out for the loot. Reviews have not been good.

• The Curse of the Golden Flower is a Chinese film, directed by celebrated director Zhang Yimou (Red Lantern). It is the most expensive Chinese movie yet made, and deals with the hothouse politics of the Forbidden City and the Chinese court of 1 000 years ago. The emperor is poisoning his wife who is having an affair with her stepson. Starring Chow Yun Fat, Li Gong and Jay Chou. All reviews suggest that while this is not Zhang's best film, it is spectacular to look at.

• Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directs 28 Weeks Later, a sequel to 28 Days Later, with the flesh-eating zombies winning - until the U.S. Army arrives in London to send them packing.

Reviews have been encouraging - if you like zombie/horror flicks. Starring Robert Carlyle and Rose Byrne.
