Sprint ace takes top river race honours

2008-07-28 00:00

Michael Arthur, perhaps better known for his exploits on the sprint course, took the honours in the first race of the 2008-2009 KZN river racing season, the Alexander Caruth No. 1 Race, with a win of almost two minutes over Mark Mulder.

Shaun Griffin took the third spot in a sprint for the line with leading junior Andrew Birkett.

Lance Kime was the second junior ahead of Luke Chalupsky.

Junior Robyn Kime made no mistakes for a two-minute win in the women’s race over Lauren Symons, who narrowly outsprinted Hillary Pitchford at the finish at Baynes Drift Bridge. U14 Brittany Petersen from Epworth was the second girl home ahead of another Epworth paddler, Kate Johnson.

The race doubled as the KZN Trial for the K1 team to the Tracker Highlands SA K1 River Championships in two weeks’ time in the Eastern Free State.
