Squash: Schools

2012-08-09 00:00

SIXTEEN schools representing their provinces will participate in the SA Top Schools Squash tournament to be held in Pietermaritzburg this weekend.

Epworth and MIchaelhouse will be representing KwaZulu-Natal. Many of the top SA players will be in action and some very good squash is expected. Kenyon Smith (MHS and SA U16) will play Daniel Greef (Paarl BHS) and Murray Comins, the U16 National champion from WP. The boys tournament is open this year with no clear favourites but Paarl, the top seeds in the boys section, will be challenged by Rondebosch, WP and Michaelhouse.

The girls’ section also hosts many SA players with Megan Page (Pretoria GHS) recently returned from the Worlds Junior Championships in Doha. Ashleigh Schepers (Collegiate, EP), Bianca Brown (Hudson Park, Border) and Mikaila Westmorland (St Dunstans, Easterns) all toured with the SA team to Malaysia earlier this year and are in good form. Epworth, with three SA players, have a team capable of winning and Nadia Ramchandra, Kayleigh Black and Tayla Victor were all members of the SA touring team. St Marys (Gauteng) have a well balanced team and the teams from Border and Northerns also have some good players, so some close matches are expected.

The tournament starts tomorrow and matches will be played at Collegians and Epworth throughout the weekend. The finals will be at Epworth on Sunday morning starting at 8 am.
