THE annual Dave Short Inter-Provincial Masters Squash Tournament will take place at various venues in Pietermaritzburg this weekend.

It is one of the most successful and popular events on the squash calendar and involves 202 men and women from the following regions: Gauteng, Dolphin Coast, Easterns, Midlands, Free State, Lowveld, Vaal Triangle, Northerns, Border, South Coast and KZN.

Starting at 8.30 am, two matches will be played on Saturday and one on Sunday at the following venues: Collegians Club, Lynwood Club, Victoria Country Club, Varsity, Maritzburg College and Maritzburg Golf Club. All functions will take place at Maritzburg Golf Club.

In 1987, the inaugural Maritzburg Inter-provincial Veterans Tournament was organised by Dave Short, a local businessman and squash enthusiast.

For the first four or five years, the final Sunday luncheon was held at either Hilton College or Michaelhouse. Later, it was unanimously agreed that the tournament should be named after its founder, Short, in recognition of his involvement and passion for the game.

This year’s is the 26th Dave Short Inter-provincial tournament.
