ST ANNE’S Hospital in Pietermaritzburg and St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban will provide medical support to the Comrades Marathon runners this year.

St Anne’s Hospital manager Louis Joubert confirmed that both hospitals will admit runners in need of help free of charge on the day of the marathon.

Even patients without medical aid, or the financial means to otherwise be treated at these hospitals, will be given 24 hours of care at either St Anne’s or St Augustine’s.

Patients who require longer medical care and are unable to stay on at these hospitals will be moved to public facilities once they are stable.

“As a value-added service we will also, where necessary, supply patients with a meal, access to a telephone and transport back to their hotel,” said Joubert.

“Both hospitals possess state-of-the-art emergency facilities and first-class staff members. We are completely ready for this prestigious race,” he said.

Netcare 911 paramedics will also be available to assist runners at the roadside.
