St Charles do well to defeat DHS at football tourney

ST CHARLES outdid themselves with a win against DHS on Saturday, but on Sunday could not produce the same football at the Poobie Naidoo Cup held on the inner field at the Golden Horse Casino.

St Charles 1 DHS 0

St Charles did very well to defeat visitors DHS, who are a talented and skilful team, and considered to be one of the better sides in KZN. Packed with players with individual brilliance and a good flair for the game, they constantly put St Charles under pressure during the first half. They created many chances and were unfortunate not to be a goal up by half time.

St Charles showed character in absorbing the pressure imposed by the strong DHS side. They defended well and worked hard off the ball for each other. It was a great display of passing and running off the ball while working well in combinations. As they grew in confidence in the second half, they kept possession well and created chances of their own.

Tuks Khumalo scored late in the half from a set piece to put St Charles into the lead, which they then held for the remaining few minutes.

Poobie Naidoo Cup

Ixopo High School won a thrilling final after equalising in the last seconds of the game against Haythorne Secondary in the inaugural Poobie Naidoo High School’s Cup. The goal by Thandoxulu “Ching Ching” Dlamini, who was also the recipient of the goal/moment of the match, sent the match to penalties, which Ixopo won 3-0.

Ixopo had taken an early lead which was equalised just a few minutes later, leaving the sides locked at 1-1 at the break. Haythorne went in front before the cup-saving goal by Dlamini. This was his second goal after he had put Ixopo into the early lead.

Innocent Mbenwana, goalkeeper for Haythorne, won the Player of the Tournament. The tournament saw eight local high schools take on each other and the level of football on display was of an excellent standard.

The semi-finals saw Haythorne winning their pool with Ixopo as runners up. Haythorne had beaten Ixopo 9-0 in a one-sided pool game. The other pool was won by Carter with Alexandra the runners-up, despite Alex having beaten Carter 4-1 in the pool game.

Ixopo and Carter drew 0-0, but Ixopo then won 5-4 on penalties to go through to the final. Haythorne and Alex also drew 1-1, but Haythorne won the penalty shoot-out.
