Stabbed driver crashes

2008-03-24 00:00

A MAN who was attacked and stabbed while driving his car died after the car crashed in Northdale yesterday. The body of Elias Bhekizipho Hlongwane (50) was found lying a few metres from his vehicle, which had crashed against a wall.

Police said it appeared Hlongwane tried to fight off two passengers who attacked him while he drove.

Inspector Joey Jeevan said the two men attempted to take control of the vehicle. An altercation broke out and Hlongwane was stabbed several times in the chest.

“The vehicle veered out of control and collided with a wall,” she said. Hlongwane stumbled out of the vehicle, but collapsed and died a few metres away from his vehicle. The two men fled from the scene.

Quick reaction from the police led to the arrest of two men in connection with the murder.

Jeevan said the motive for the killing was robbery.

The two suspects, aged 19 and 23, are expected to appear at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

Police investigations continue.
