Stabbing: 12 years for man who killed his neighbour

2011-11-03 00:00

A 29-YEAR-OLD man from Himeville, Sthembiso Khumalo, was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for killing his former neighbour with a spear on October 2, last year.

Khumalo said in a statement before acting high court judge Kobus Booyens that he and the victim, Peto Syril Molefe (68), had quarrelled some time prior to the incident.

This resulted in Molefe hitting him with an open hand across the face, and on another occasion he had hit him with a sjambok all over his body.

On the day in question both men attended a traditional function in the area.

Khumalo said he had consumed alcohol, but was not so drunk that he could not appreciate what he was doing.

When he saw Molefe leaving the function alone, he took a spear from the roof of the house, followed him and stabbed him once in the back.

The court found that compelling and substantial circumstances existed in the case, justifying a reduced sentence.
